In The Mix

A few bucks go far
at Pa'ina

IT'S TAKEN nearly a year, but Pa'ina is finally making a push for the younger crowd. Since it opened in December, the nightspot has stuck with a mix of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music performed live and on a jukebox. Starting last Thursday, however, UH students (and anyone else on a budget) with only a few bucks to spend can live large at Pa'ina.

"Twisted Thursdays" kicked off last week, featuring $1 domestic bottles and $1 tequila shots for those with a death wish. The cover is only $1, too, and DJs Kool E and Taktik throw down on four decks at this 18-and-over party until 1:30 a.m. Pa'ina is located next to the Hawaiian Tattoo Company on the South King Street side of Puck's Alley ...

LOOKING FORWARD to dressing up and being glamorous tonight? Then pick out your flashiest gear and head to the Wave Waikiki for the Pussycat Lounge's "Glitter & Glamour Experience," kicking off at 9 p.m.

Los Angeles DJ PAULe from the group Biohazard makes a return appearance tonight at the Wave, spinning a mix of house, techno and trance. I've heard that, after this month's performance, he plans to release a new album, tentatively called "PAULe Live From the Glitter & Glamour Experience."

Rounding out tonight's event are free glitter makeovers by CHOP Salon, free massages by Paul Brown Salon, a fire show by Swingkidd, an art exhibition by local artist Mike G. and local DJs Charles Lee, D Mofo D, Daddy's Girl, KSM, Rayne, Sub Zero and Tim B. mixing things up onstage and in the upstairs lounge. $10 gets you in before midnight, otherwise it's $12. Call 941-0424, Ext. 12 for info ...

AND TOMORROW NIGHT, check out the first installment of "Syncopation" at Cafe Sistina. Breakbeat fans should enjoy this new offering by DJs Monkey and Toki, along with the China Giant.

Special guests at tomorrow night's 18-and-over party are DJs Kause (of the Basement Addicts) and Seeko, and in the upcoming weeks members of crews like the Microscopics, Sisters in Sound, Nsomniak Lounge and the Treehaus will show up as well.

Doors open at 10 p.m. tomorrow night for "Syncopation," with no cover before 11. After that, it's $8 to get in if you're under 21, $5 if you're over. Cafe Sistina is located at 1314 S. King St.; call 596-0061 ...
