Wallace gets out
of hospital after
successful surgery

A week after he was admitted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace was released.

The 60-year-old Wallace underwent surgery last Friday to remove two subdural hematomas on the left side of his head. Yesterday morning's CT scan proved negative and the coach was released at about 1:30 p.m. HST.

Wallace and his wife Joan are expected to return to Hawaii Sunday. The coach had been hospitalized since last Thursday after he went to the emergency room complaining of severe headaches and dizziness.

Castillo adds stroke play title

Hapuna's Ron Castillo Jr. followed in his father's footsteps, becoming the seventh golfer to win the Aloha Section Stroke Play Championship and the Match Play Championship in the same year. His father did it in 1976.

Castillo Jr. beat Pearl CC's Kevin Hayashi 2-1 in the final.

Kalani forfeits football game

Tomorrow night's high school football game between Kalani and Waialua has already been decided without even a snap.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association announced yesterday that Kalani had forfeited the game to Waialua in what was to be the Bulldogs' homecoming. It will still take place, but the game on the field will be between the two junior varsity squads.

Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director Keith Amemiya said last night that Kalani (0-3) had too many injuries and lack of eligible players to field a squad. Waialua raised its record to 2-1 for the season.

Div II top performers

Chun Yun Li, BYUH volleyball: The freshman middle blocker from Pingtune, Taiwan, averaged 5.3 kills per game and hit .548 to keep the Seasiders undefeated and earn PacWest Player of the Week honors.

She was named tournament MVP of the Western Washington Invitational a week after teammate Yu Chuan Weng was named national player of the week.

Robert Tyler, Hawaii Pacific cross country: Although he was only third fastest at the Chaminade Invitational, Tyler was the biggest surprise and allowed coach Vien Schwinn to begin thinking about a regional championship after just the first meet of the season.
