Vandals hit Kailua Intermediate School last night, leaving graffiti and pictures of drug paraphernalia on many of its concrete buildings.

Michael Lucich, music teacher, described the graffiti as being "rather extensive," with almost all of the school's cream-colored buildings sprayed with black paint. "It is pretty nasty," said Lucich.

He described the writing as "lewd," and there also were sketches of crystal meth pipes and marijuana plants.

The school's principal, Lorraine Henderson, met with the school's seventh and eight graders at two assemblies this morning to review the situation and "listen to the student's concerns," Lucich said.

School officials believe the vandals hit the campus, which is located near Kailua's police and fire stations and public pool, sometime late last night or early this morning.

"Most of us were here late last night since we had an open house," Lucich said.

Four police officers were assigned to the Kailua campus of about 1,000 students and were expected to remain there throughout the day.

Lucich said the school's janitorial staff was out with paint brushes and paint this morning, working to cover up the black spray paint.

"It will be a long job," Lucich predicted. "However, it is the policy of the school not to let things like this bring us down."
