Can you smell it?

While the so-called "stinking rose" will be the star of next weekend's Hawaii Garlic Festival and Home Grown Products event at the Waikiki Shell, there'll be musical stars, as well. Three stages will be the setting for performances by O-shen, Opihi Pickers, Vaihi, Chant, Jennifer Perri, Forté, Chief Ragga, Reign, Believe, Koa'uka, Tino & the Rhythm Klub, Solana, Epic Session, Cory Oliveros and Kimo Opiana, H2O and Son Caribe.

There will be watermelon- and corn-eating contests, clowns, jugglers, a floral-decorating competition, crafts and a "Hawaii Stars" talent competition.

A keiki pavilion will feature rides and inflatables, hands-on crafts and computer games, including a Playstation section. Extreme sports will also be part of the mix, with trick skateboarding demonstrations from 808-SKATE and "wrassling" matches from the Island X-Treme Wrestling Federation.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and until 6 p.m. next Sunday. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the gate, with free admission for keiki under 12 and seniors over 65. Call 528-7388.

'Monsoon' downtown

Tickets are available for Monstera Monsoon, a fund-raiser for the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center's educational programs, 5 to 7:30 p.m., Sept. 25 in Ali'iolani Hale, home of Hawaii's Supreme Court.

The event, named for the giant plants surrounding the Supreme Court building, will feature Indo-Asian pupus from the Wild Mushroom, desserts from Café Laufer, a lion blessing, a silent auction and entertainment by Jake Shimabukuro and Mihana Souza. The event's honorees are Nancy Ellis and Esther "Kiki" Mookini.

The silent auction will feature gift certificates for resort holidays, fine dining, boutiques, theater tickets and more.

The Judiciary History Center is "one of Hawaii's best-kept secrets," said the organization's executive director, Paris Chai. "We offer exciting exhibits, tours, mock trials, outreach programs and biographical events relating to Hawaii's unique judicial history." She's hoping the event will encourage people to venture beyond the Kamehameha statue at 417 S. King St. to find out what's going on at the center.

Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling 539-4999.
