Do the law classes
have theatre seats?

NO wonder local attorneys are so well prepared for their courtroom appearances! Just look at the seminar program which students at UH's Richardson Law School can sign up to take. It's called "Legal Movie Seminar," and the first meeting of the seminar was when the class collectively watched "Paper Chase." Next up is "The Firm" in October, and the title isn't indicative of requirements for legal secretaries. The third seminar in November will feature "Legally Blonde" -- I kid you not -- and if that doesn't relieve mid-term stress, I don't know what would. I suppose "To Kill a Mockingbird" is too old-fashioned ...

Congrats to three full-time college students who've won scholarships from the Hawaii Advertising Federation. All three say they plan for careers in the advertising industry in Hawaii. The three are HPU student Nicole Posca, Boston University's Michelle Kiyomi Coleman and Waiakea High grad Garrett DeLorm, now attending Notre Dame ... Keoki Kahumoku and Herb Ohta Jr. both like Reyn Spooner aloha shirts and will even more now that they're celebrating their "Treasures of Aloha" CD by performing at Reyn's Ala Moana tomorrow from 1 to 2 p.m. And wouldn't you know the two are wearing Reyn shirts in the CD cover photo? ...

Jazz at UH

THE UH Campus Center wanted a series of three jazz evening concerts, so who better to turn to than Jazz Fest honcho Abe Weinstein. This first of the three features Keahi Conjugation & Friends on Sept. 27 on campus. Abe has always been one to keep busy, and now is no exception. He's also backing up Lou Rawls with the Honolulu Pops orchestra Sept. 26 and 27 and following that, boards the "Dawn Princess" and then the "Regal Princess" to promote and perform jazz ...

AFTER picking up a copy of Larry Manetti's book on "Magnum P.I." at Fred Piluso's Scruples nightclub, a producer of The Travel Channel decided to do a segment on the actor/author. Yesterday they filmed in L.A. with producer Don Bellasario and tomorrow they're due to film at Scruples ... A lot of Waikiki performers are supporting Dalton Tanonaka in his race for lieutenant governor. Slated to appear at his 5:30 gathering tonight at the Japanese Cultural Center are Melveen Leed, Mel Cabang, Glenn "Hana Boy" Pinho and Tony Ruivivar of the Society of Seven ...

Sex sells

THE October issue of Wired magazine quotes UH futurist James Dator, who sees things the rest of us only dream of. According to the magazine, Dator thinks that in 15 years "we'll have sex tourism in space, because that's what will make money. Early adoption of technology has always been about sex. Space will be no different." Is that why that 'N Sync kid wanted to go up in the Russian shuttle? ... Odd to see Whitney Houston getting into trouble for keeping the grass on her lawn over-watered. In Hilo, she had the opposite problem with dried grass ...
