UH-Hilo sociologist's class writes 9/11 book

A University of Hawaii-Hilo sociologist believes terrorists are a lot like domestic abusers.

People who terrorize a country or their own family often live in isolation and have a lot of frustrations in life, said professor Thom Curtis, whose class just published a book about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "The only control they have is coercion or violence, that's the only way a terrorist feels they have any control of their own world or destiny," he said yesterday.

The book containing the thoughts of Hawaii's leaders and personalities in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, compiled and written by 35 students, was scheduled for release today.

"Hawaii Remembers September 11" contains the thoughts of 64 people with Hawaii ties, from Gov. Ben Cayetano and U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye to Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Onan Masaoka and Chef Sam Choy.

"I thought it was important for us to do this exercise, not only for the educational benefits, but for the importance of collecting these memories while they were still fresh," Curtis said. "To create an archive of what the prominent people of Hawaii were thinking."

Curtis assisted the American Red Cross in New York by counseling survivors of the terrorist attacks. When he returned to Hilo, Curtis came up with the book idea for his class on the sociology of family violence.

In addition to the interviews, the book features poems written by isle 4th and 5th graders and biographies of nine Hawaii residents who were killed.
