Thirty-one students from Iao Intermediate School on Maui sang the Hawaiian rendition of "Children Singing Peace Around the World" at the Foundry Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., Sunday.

We Remember

The students left for the mainland Thursday on a peace mission for the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to share peace and express our aloha to the people," said Lei'ohu Ryder, a social studies teacher at Iao Intermediate School who accompanied the students on their trip.

Teacher Dane Kaneshina said, "This is a prime opportunity for them."

Maui resident Dawn Ferguson wrote the song the students performed at the Foundry Methodist Church.

The song has been translated into 15 languages.

The students will also be joining the Philharmonic Orchestra at the lawn of the White House to commemorate those who died in the attacks. Iao students also plan to visit New York and attend a Yankees baseball game and Broadway shows before returning to Maui on Sept. 20.
