Ken Ito

Election 2002

Democrat

Age: 58 Job: Schoolteacher Past: State representative; Kaneohe Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My educational background, military experience, community involvement and legislative accomplishments are qualifications that help me to be an effective legislator.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Issues that deal with the economy, environment, education and the elderly are important concerns in our district. Traffic and roads, problems with maintenance of our streams are being addressed by working in partnership with our city, state and federal agencies.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Amend the laws that hinders business, making government more efficient. Support more consumer-oriented measures that will put more spending money back into the pockets of taxpayers.

Sam Moku

Republican

Age: 38 Job: Legislative chief of staff Past: Board member, Kaneohe Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I am a lifelong resident of Kaneohe and my legislative and community experience will aid me in assisting constituents and making a positive difference in the quality of life for families. It's time to restore public confidence in government and bring about a paradigm shift in how we do government.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Improving customer service in all state departments. I would require that all state departments work on improving customer service by going out into the community, neighborhood boards, town meetings, etc., to report or listen to community input or concerns on projects that affect those communities.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

By continuing to support and improve the Tourism industry and existing industries that contribute to our economy, i.e., High-Tech, Agriculture. ... I would also increase our support to the University of Hawaii and public education system. These are the pillars of our economy and when they are healthy our economy thrives.
