Makakilo-Kapolei

Michael J. Golojuch Jr.

Election 2002

Republican

Age: 29 Job: Opening a wedding business Past: Friends of the Library - Hawaii & Kapolei

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My dedication to ensuring that we have a quality public education system and since I am a civil-rights activist, I'm a fighter! I will fight, not only to for my district's needs, but also to guarantee that everyone in Hawaii has the same rights and protections under the law.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Ensuring that the UH-West Oahu Campus is actually funded and built plus making sure that Kapolei Library is fully funded. These two projects require a person that can work with others without compromising the main objective. Our current representative has proven that this is something that is beyond his capabilities.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Diversification! Hawaii needs to have more than one source of revenue. We need to invest in agriculture, information and biotechnology fields. These areas have first-class growth potential. Our major export needs to stop being our talented families! That trend will only stop once we have a strong diversified economy.

Kyle Greenwood

Democrat

Age: 32 Job: Massage therapist Past: Member, neighborhood board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I lived here most of my life. I think that my degree is a good qualifier for office.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

The construction for a University West Oahu and other school in the area need to be pushed more. I would like to eliminate the $350 million we pay interest a year, that would leave enough to fix ALL the schools in two years.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Better education that will make employers want to move here to tap into the talent.

Mark Steven Moses

Republican

Age: 54 Job: Retired Marine Corps major Past: State representative; ex-member, Makakilo Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I am a resident of my community for more than 20 years, actively involved in the planning and design activities of this growing area, and actively involved with many area organizations and groups. I remain a full time Legislator with unlimited access by my neighbors without outside influences or distractions.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Traffic-Economy-Jobs. As member of House Transportation, Finance, and federally mandated Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy committees, I've worked to fund and/or gain federal authorization to work on Farrington Highway, Fort Barrette Road, Makakilo, Palailai and Kapolei Interchanges, build NS Road, and finish Kapolei Parkway.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Reduce taxes to stimulate economic growth and create new jobs. Eliminate GET on food, residential rent, and medical services. Reductions will result in short-term loss of revenue but will stimulate economic growth and increase revenues long-term. ...

Maeda C. Timson

Democrat

Age: 51 Job: Assistant bank vice president Past: Makakilo Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I bring over 30 years of community service from the fastest growing city -- Kapolei. I have the knowledge of issues and community concerns, and the proven ability to bring groups of people together to make good and prideful things happen. We see a clear and bright vision for the future.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Complete Kapolei High and Library and construct the University West Oahu and royal Kunia Elementary. More funding must be appropriated with CIP funds and fast tracked. Open communication and partnership with developer a necessity.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Let's create real and binding partnerships between businesses, government and community to build an even stronger and environmentally safe tourism plan. Excellence in these areas will also improve our education system and provide career opportunities for our children and us.
