Aiea-Halawa

Judith H. (Judy) Magin

Election 2002

Republican

Age: 61 Job: Former small business owner Past: Delegate, White House Conference on Small Business in 1995

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I have been active in the political process as a volunteer with various organizations. I know the problems facing small business and the economy. I was forced to close my small business in 2001. I bring leadership, common sense and wisdom to the office. I promise to serve my district.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

First, I must listen to what the people want and then go from there. Traffic and the appearance of the area seem to be the most pressing issue.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Reduce taxes, give tax holidays for items such as clothing purchases under $100.00 (like many other states do). I would vote to remove taxes on medical and food. Offer tax incentives for light manufacturing industries to set up business and provide jobs and make products for export.

Blake K. Oshiro

Democrat

Age: 32 Job: Attorney Past: State representative; Youth Camp counselor/ facilitator

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

Years of volunteering with Hawaii's youth and community groups and practicing as an attorney have strengthened my commitment and ability to fight for needed changes. Being young with fresh ideas and independence, I'm working hard at the Legislature to ensure that my community and Hawaii's best interests are served.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Ensuring that we pass on "Our Hawaii" to our children by preventing further decline in our quality of life crack down on crime; support education; provide good jobs to keep people in Hawaii; preserve our natural resources; and reduce time spent in our cars rather than at home.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

We must nurture a diversified economy, cultivating new opportunities (technology, bio-tech, renewable energy production) while continuing to strengthen the traditional base of tourism, military and agriculture. Fight against tax-increases during now fragile economy.
