Signe Godfrey

Election 2002

Republican

Age: 60 Job: President, Olsten Staffing Services Past: Rotary Club of Honolulu; Friends of Foster Kids

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My qualifications come from being in business for 15 years. I feel the impact daily from the anti-business legislation. For this reason, I am also motivated to become part of the solution that will make a difference for the people of our state.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Lack of vision. If our district supports businesses this could increase jobs, increase our tax base, help build our economy which would take better care of our people. We do have some traffic problems that has been ongoing for years and lessened by the installation of more traffic lights.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

First, create an environment that supports employers. Second, market Hawaii to companies who need our naturally perfect weather, maximum work period, or ability to grow agriculture year round and a time difference that works to their favor.

Sylvia J. Luke

Democrat

Age: 35 Job: Attorney Past: State representative; Korean Centennial Commission

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I grew up in the district and have represented the district for the last four years. Therefore, I am familiar with many of the issues facing my neighbors. Also, because of my youth, I bring different and fresh perspective to the legislature.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Many of the residents in my district are concerned about things that affect their quality of life such as criminal activity in the neighborhood. I will work closely with the city to provide more support and assistance to the police and the community policing groups to curb illegal activities.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Continue to support diversification in our economy such as diversified agriculture, hi-tech industry, biotech industry, and the health care industry. Also, provide tax incentives for industries such as the construction industry, which yield the best multiplier effect to help the state's economy.
