Christopher T. Kelly

Election 2002

Republican

Age: 53 Job: Physician Past: Member, Ala Moana/ Kakaako Neighborhood Board What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I feel that I am qualified to be a state representative because as a neighborhood board member, I am informed as to the problems of my community and have to deal with many of them personally. In addition, I am better attuned to the "pulse of the community".

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

District 22 is a diverse community; therefore, there is not a single "most pressing issue." Issues that are of concern in this district include: property crime, schools, traffic concerns and illegal bar activities. It will take an open-minded and diverse approach to solve such diverse issues.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

The best way to stimulate Hawaii's economy is simple -- TAX CUTS. It has been shown time and time again on the mainland in numerous states that tax cuts not only improve the state's economy, but increase the tax revenues for the state as well.

I am an advocate for our community and have the record to solve problems. I have blocked unfair tax increases and co-chaired the Felix Investigative Committee. What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Crime and Traffic. I will work to increase security and community patrols, to pass legislation that deters crime (such as drug-related activity) that occurs in our community, and to increase safety for senior citizens.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

We must focus on the basics of economic growth in Hawaii. Develop a skilled workforce through the educational system. Maintain the environment. Minimize barriers to small business development. Responsibly market Hawaii products, tourism, and agricultural products. Support research and development in growth areas.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Enhanced quality of life for Hawaii's families, the protection of children, seniors and other members of the community who are unable to fully defend themselves through expanding access to affordable health care and medicine, development of additional nursing and assisted living facilities; and expanding the scope of neighborhood policing.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Expanded economic opportunity through incentives to create jobs; streamlined small business regulation; within the context of affordable government where necessary services are sustainable in good and bad economic conditions without higher or new taxes. ...
