Election 2002

[ STATE HOUSE ]

20

St. Louis-Wilhelmina Rise

Wayne W. Gau

Election 2002

Republican

Age: 54 Job: Clergyman, teacher, historian. Past: Member, Diamond Head-Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My training and experience as a clergyman in dealing with people's problems and concerns, my knowledge of historical trends in Hawaii's past and my background as a teacher make me well-qualified to deal with this state's current problems.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Three public schools in this district have failed to meet federal standards and could see an exodus of students to other campuses. State parks in the area are also in a state of disrepair.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

The free marketplace needs to work without governmental interference. Government cannot "invent" or "develop" industry of business. Business knows how to do the job and should be allowed to do so.

Michael "Big Mike" Palcic

Republican

Age: 53 Job: Small-business owner Past: Board member, Diamond Head Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

As a concerned and involved citizen I bring a fresh perspective to state government. Hawaii needs representatives with open minds whose actions are not tied to the entrenched interests of yesterday. My education, community involvement and business experience provide the tools to move forward.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

State government has gone stale. It is very wasteful. Even ardent supporters admit that the state is poorly run and would consider voting differently. We have an incumbent of 26 years occupying a position of leadership. If he cannot be held responsible for the condition of government, who can?

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

An educated work force is the most vital resource for long-term economic strength. I support our schools and the autonomous growth of the University of Hawaii. In the short term I would seek to remove government obstacles to business creation and operation.

Calvin K.Y. Say

Democrat

Age: 50 Job: President, Kotake Shokai Ltd. Past: State representative; Palolo Lions

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

First and foremost is my years of experience in state government and also having an occupation in the private sector. I also bring to the office stability and continuity the operations of state government.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Addressing our senior citizens who are on a fixed income, soaring cost of prescription drugs and long term care. Secondly, addressing our need of quality public education since we have three schools that are on the list of corrective actions.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Be very open to all proposals of procuring outside investments to the state of Hawaii in support of venture capital, bio-tech development, health care industries, etc.
