Election 2002

Republican

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

Vision, experience and a strong moral compass are necessary components for a good legislator. One must continuously direct the state toward an economically - strong and self-sufficient viability. Legislative experience teaches us to achieve our goals. A strong and honest heart allows legislators to vote their conscience.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Education. Parents want their children to have the best education possible. They want an excellent public school system with qualified, well-paid teachers, adequate, safe facilities and ample books and supplies. We must allow more autonomy and place more resources at the neighborhood school level.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Allowing judicious tax breaks and easing up on bureaucratic red tape will help stimulate the economy. We want to help small business rather than bogging them down in unnecessary regulations. We want to help families by not taxing their groceries, rent and medical care.

Brian Yamane

Democrat

Age: 55 Job: Insurance agent Past: Former state representative; Diamond Head Lions

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I have successfully authored legislation and worked with both representatives and senators to see the legislation become law. I believe I can be an effective voice for the community. My family and I have long been active members of the district.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Aside from the state's economy, property crime is an important issue facing the district. To address this issue I believe we need to improve penalties in our current drug laws.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

There are many things that need to be done to stimulate our state's economy. Among them, the most pressing is to increase promotion of our local businesses and resources as well as reducing the expense of doing business in Hawaii.
