Police said he had dodged cars in two lanes before he was struck near the Fort Shafter off-ramp. He was struck by a van and then by a sedan. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anonymous tips led to the capture of three more girls who escaped Saturday from a cottage at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility Saturday.

The three include Leah Castro, 17, who is considered dangerous. She and another escapee, 16, were arrested at a Makakilo residence at 8:30 a.m. yesterday.

A third girl, 15, was arrested yesterday afternoon in front of 550 Halekauwila St. in Kakaako.

Altogether, 10 girls overpowered two guards employed by Child and Family Services, ripped phone wires from the wall, stole guard radios, facility and van keys and fled in a van. Police later found the van parked along Keolu Drive in Enchanted Lake. Two other escapees, 15 and 16, were arrested earlier this week.

The five who remain at large include two identified by police as dangerous: Shaena Nakooka, 16, and Tiare Perez, 17. The girls were convicted of felony crimes involving violence of the threat of force or violence.

WAIKIKI

Cigarette may have caused apartment fire

Residents of a Waikiki apartment were able to put out a fire that gutted their living room this morning before firefighters arrived. The 4:40 a.m. fire in the first floor apartment at 420 Olohana caused an estimated $15,000 damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation but firefighters believe it may have been started by a cigarette left on a chair.

The Red Cross is assisting the two residents of the apartment.

Shooting suspect on parole from DUI death

A woman accused of fatally shooting an acquaintance last month because he allegedly robbed her at knifepoint and made sexual advances was on parole for an earlier conviction and was not supposed to be in possession of a firearm.

Totie Tauala is charged with second-degree murder for shooting Hayward Julio on Aug. 21. Julio died of blood loss from multiple gunshot wounds.

District Judge Rhonda Nishimura found there was probable cause that Tauala had caused Julio's death, and sent the case to Circuit Court for trial. Tauala will be arraigned on Sept. 19.

Tauala had pleaded guilty in 1995 to driving under the influence and causing the death of a passenger, said Deputy Prosecutor Douglas Chin.

Jo Desmarets, Tauala's parole officer, said Tauala was not allowed to possess a firearm.

Parents of teen killed in crosswalk sue driver

The parents of a teenager struck by a car and killed while crossing Fort Weaver Road in July are suing the driver.

Marilene Bacani was crossing the road in a marked crosswalk early July 9 when she was struck by a car driven by Janet Uchida.

Bacani's parents, Alberto and Isabelita, claim their daughter's death was caused by Uchida's negligence. They are seeking damages to be determined at trial.
