Interior ambition

In keeping with the American Society of Interior Designers of Hawaii's philosophy of integrating arts and lifestyle, the organization's annual awards banquet Aug. 27 offered a multisensory feast.

Kathy Gurski, of Kathy Gurski Designs, was banquet coordinator and used the arts as her theme. "Interior design is an art, so I wanted to incorporate it with other forms of art, such as opera and dance."

So as 160 ASID members gathered at the Hilton Hawaiian Village to honor their best, Hawaii Opera Theatre singers took the stage and Iona Pear Dancers cavorted in slow, graceful motion, mixing and mingling with guests in the process.

The banquet hall was an open house, with attention paid to such details as gold-toned name tags, handmade and folded with a hint of origami flair to mirror the place cards. Each table had a centerpiece comprising variations of bromeliad in open-weave baskets or rustic vases.

ASID-Hawaii works with the American Institute of Architects, the Building Industry Association and industry leaders to promote and create aesthetic and practical, sustainable living and working environments.
