Talk to focus on biotech in medicine

Dr. Edwin Cadman, dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine, will discuss "The Biotechnology Influence on the Future of Medicine" at a meeting of the World Future Society, Hawaii Chapter, Sept. 12.

The public is invited to the event from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Plaza Club, downtown Honolulu. The cost is $25 for nonmembers and $23 for members. Reservations are required. Call 225-3548.

Union parade to end in Kapiolani Park rally

A Labor Day parade and rally in Waikiki today is expected to draw more than 500 union members.

The parade begins 9:30 a.m. at Magic Island and will go down Ala Moana and Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park, where a rally will be held at 11 a.m.

Ah Quon McElrath, a Hawaii labor pioneer, will be grand marshal of the parade and keynote speaker at the rally.

Maui councilman faces another DUI

WAILUKU >> Maui County Councilman Wayne Nishiki is facing his second drunken-driving charge in four years.

Nishiki, 58, was arrested Friday near Sugar Beach.

Police said he took a Breathalyzer test and was found to be over the legal limit of 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level.

He was released later Friday night after posting $257 bail.

Nishiki said he is embarrassed by the arrest and apologized to the community.

Nishiki was fined $332 and ordered to undergo 14 hours of alcohol abuse counseling after his DUI arrest in December 1998. He said at the time that he would not drink and drive again.

Nishiki is seeking re-election to his South Maui Council seat and has two opponents.

Man sought in robbery of fast-food employee

Police are looking for a man who robbed a woman yesterday who was leaving a fast-food outlet in Honolulu.

About 3:20 p.m., an employee left Burger King at 2536 S. Beretania St. when the suspect brandished a handgun and demanded that the woman give him her handbag. Police said the suspect fled with the bag.

Police said the handbag contained some of the establishment's business receipts. The woman suffered no injuries.

The suspect is described as in his 20s, between 5 foot 6 and 6 feet, weighing between 140 and 150 pounds, with a slim to medium build, dark neck-length hair and a tan complexion. He was wearing a light-colored T-shirt, black baseball cap and sunglasses.

3 men rob attendant outside strip club

Police are looking for three men who robbed a parking attendant yesterday morning at the Kamani Street parking lot of Exotic Nights, a strip club near Ward Avenue.

Police said the men were with about 17 other men.

Police said that at about 4 a.m. a man in a black jacket took money from the attendant's pocket. A second man, wearing a blue jacket, then threatened the attendant with a semiautomatic handgun before fleeing with the first man.

A third man approached the attendant and asked whether the attendant knew the two men, according to the police report. Police said the third man then punched the victim before escaping in a lowered white Honda Civic.

The first man is described as having a dark complexion, 18-20 years old, 5 feet 4 inches and about 125 pounds. The second man is described as about 5 feet 3 inches, with a fair complexion, a thick black mustache and long black hair.

Drive-by bag snatching hurts Japanese tourist

Police are searching for two men who robbed a Japanese tourist Saturday afternoon while he was walking toward Diamond Head Crater on Diamond Head Access Road.

Police said the men drove up to the victim about 1:30 p.m. in a white station wagon. One of the men leaned out of the passenger window and grabbed the victim's bag. The men dragged the victim about 20 feet before he let go of his bag. The victim was treated and released at Queen's Medical Center for minor cuts and bruises.

Waianae man arrested in gun threat to women

Police arrested a 37-year-old Waianae man Saturday morning for kidnapping, terroristic threatening and abuse of a household member.

The man told his girlfriend and her friend that he had a gun and forced them into his car at the 7-Eleven at 85-010 Farrington Hwy., police said. He released the second woman before he took his girlfriend back to their Farrington Highway residence. Police did not release further details.

Police question woman in Waipahu shooting

Totie Nalani Tauala remains at the main station of the Honolulu Police Department for questioning about a fatal shooting that occurred on Aug. 21 near Waipahu High School.

Police located Tauala at a Village Park residence Friday night. She was arrested on a warrant as an alleged parole violator. Tauala has a record that includes a 1996 negligent-homicide conviction.

The Aug. 21 victim, Hayward Julio, had been living in the Victory Ohana residential drug treatment facility in Iwilei on the day he was killed.
