‘Lysistrata,’ ‘Three
Musketeers’ among theater
opportunities for local talent

Another theater season begins, accompanied by a search for talent. Here are some of the productions seeking singers, actors and dancers:

'Lysistrata'

At least 30 performers are needed to perform in the comedy by Aristophanes to be staged by the University of Hawaii Department of Theatre and Dance on the Kennedy Theatre main stage. UH student and staff auditions take place 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at Kennedy Theatre Room 109. Community auditions take place 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Rehearsals are set to begin Sept. 9.

Glenn Cannon plans to present the tale of politics and war in a sexy, cheery way, without use of Greek theater forms. Those with little or no experience are encouraged to try out.

Performances will take place Oct. 23 through Nov. 3.

Auditioners will be asked to read monologues from the play and to participate in simple movement and improvisational exercises. Members of the UH community are considered for casting first.

Scripts are available for a three-day sign-out in the Kennedy Theatre office with a $5 deposit. Call 956-7677 for information about script sign-out. For other questions about auditions, contact Cannon at 956-2110 or through e-mail at gcannon@hawaii.edu.

Auditions, rehearsals and performances will be held in HPU's Windward Campus Theatre at 45-045 Kamehameha Hwy. in Kaneohe.

The performance dates are Nov. 8 through 16. Check out scripts from the drama office prior to the auditions. Swords and daggers will be provided. Actors should come prepared to move.

Welly Yang, founder and artistic director of Second Generation, whose goal is to nurture the Asian-American voice onstage, will be in Honolulu for the auditions. Auditioners should bring prepared selections from a Broadway show, with sheet music needing no transcription. The selected singer may be asked to perform their audition piece in the Oct. 5 show or may be asked to prepare new material. Accompanist Melina Lillios will be playing for the auditions.

In addition, the selected singer will be appearing in duet with Yang, as well as fellow headliners Cliffton Hall, Jade Stice or DeeDee Lynn Magno.

Prizes for the winner include a neighbor-island getaway for two, including air fare, car rental and hotel.
