Kamehameha routs Waimea

High School Scoreboard

It had the promise of a high-energy preseason tilt between a three-time state football tournament team and one that just missed making the tournament the past three years.

But it turned out to be all Kamehameha last night against visiting Waimea. The Warriors grabbed a 28-7 halftime lead and cruised to a 42-7 victory at their new Kunuiakea Stadium.

The Menehunes, the 10-time reigning Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions, didn't show the same kind of fundamental football they've played the past three years in getting to the state tourney.

Kamehameha, which finished behind St. Louis in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and out of the states for the last three years, got brilliant performances from quarterback Caleb Spencer, running back Travis Beyer and wide receiver Dustin Grace.

Two early Waimea (1-1) mistakes gave Kamehameha (2-0) an early 14-0 lead. Both miscues were bad punt snaps, leading to Beyer's 11-yard touchdown scamper and Spencer's 22-yard TD toss to Grace in the right corner of the end zone.

"We had early jitters," said Waimea coach Jon Kobayashi. "That's football, you make errors and you fight back. Kamehameha was a very difficult offense to cover."

The bruising running of Jordon Dizon got Waimea on the right track, temporarily. He churned out gains of 22 and 11 yards to set up Jon Palacio's 8-yard TD pass to Tyson Fernandez to make it 14-7.

"It's a personnel thing," Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza said. "We have more players, bigger players. But Waimea was tough. I'm impressed. They can play football.

"That Dizon kid, he's one of the best I've seen, and he made some really nice runs on us, but our defensive line did a helluva job, playing responsible and covering their gaps and containing him (Dizon).

Kamehameha added two more scores in the second quarter. Keoni Ruth's 23-yard catch-and-run of a Spencer pass set up Beyer's 4-yard TD dive, and Spencer also connected with Josh Vierra, who made a one-handed 13-yard TD grab for a 28-7 halftime lead.

"We've got some skill guys and they're going to have to come to play every game if we're going to be any good," said Souza, referring to Spencer, Ruth, Beyer, Grace and some of the Warriors' other big-play threats. "But we've thrown two interceptions in two games and that's a concern."

Konawaena 32, Cascade (Ore.) 0: With fourteen seconds left in the first half, Nano Padillo plunged in for the Wildcats' first score last night at Konawaena High School. Konawaena ran off another 26 unanswered points and were led by Padillo's 212-yard, two touchdown rushing performance.

Nahe Matsuoka also recovered a Cascade fumble and returned it for a score.
