Rolo expected
to play tonight

Former Hawaii quarterback Nick Rolovich will taste real NFL action for the first time tonight as Denver plays Seattle.

He's battling Jarious Jackson for the Broncos' No. 3 quarterback spot.

According to the Rocky Mountain News, coach Mike Shanahan plans on giving both plenty of action tonight.

Rolovich survived Monday's cuts, while another quarterback, Todd Husak, didn't.

"I thought (Monday) was the day, so I didn't do too much worrying (Sunday), but then I got here (Monday) morning and things were starting to happen already," Rolovich told the News. "Obviously they want to take a little bit more of a look at me for a few days."

Viloria gets new opponent
for tomorrow's title fight

Waipahu boxer Brian Viloria had another last minute change to a card yesterday.

Viloria was scheduled to fight Gabriel Munoz for the North American Boxing Federation on ESPN2 in New York tomorrow, but Munoz was declared ineligible to fight by the New York Boxing Commission yesterday.

Munoz failed his MRI because of what Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager, called a "serious brain problem" and a "career-ending injury." New York is one of the few states that require an MRI before a fight.

The only thing that changes for Viloria is his opponent, though, as Gittelsohn found and signed Javier Lagos.

The fight will still be for the vacant NABF title and has already been sanctioned. All Lagos has to do is pass his HIV test, MRI and meet Viloria's weight today.

Lagos is from Mexico City and carries a record of 14-7-2 with 4 KOs. He won his last fight June 14 with a six-round unanimous decision over Roberto Gomez in his first fight in more than a year. Most important to Gittelsohn is that Lagos has been stopped only once, way back in 1995.

"This guy (Lagos) is very comparable to Munoz," Gittelsohn said. "He does not get stopped."

Akana to join Denver staff soon

DENVER >> The changes in the Denver Nuggets coaching staff are expected to include a move up for former Hawaii guard Jarinn Akana.

Akana is currently the Player Development/Asia Scout for Denver. The Denver Post reported that Akana is likely to be promoted to assistant coach as early as this week.

Denver recently hired Jeff Bzdelik as head coach and named former Nugget T.R. Dunn an assistant coach earlier this week.

U.S. luge search rolls into Honolulu

U.S. Olympic luge team members Brian Martin and Ashley Hayden will be in Honolulu Sept. 21-22 to recruit boys and girls ages 10-14.

The event, which incorporates sleds on wheels, will be held in the Koko Head District Park from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Those who show the most promise at the clinics -- and throughout the nationwide tour -- will be invited to train on ice next winter at Lake Placid, N.Y., Marquette, Mich., or Park City, Utah.
