‘Diamond Dave’
takes over Hank’s Cafe

IT could have been called "Dave's Cafe Honolulu," but Dave Loando, longtime bartender a Hank's Cafe Honolulu decided to stick with the moniker of Hank Taufa'asau, from whom he's taking ownership and management duties. Hank will continue to have an interest in the Nuuanu Avenue hotspot, but "Diamond Dave" will ultimately be in charge. Few changes are anticipated and the reins will passed on to Loando at the fourth anniversary party at Hank's on Sept. 5 ...

HAVING a baby is always a big occasion, but for Lehua Heine of Na Leo Pilimehana it was particularly so. She gave birth on Monday to Kalamakikeao Lauloa Heine. Not only his name is large -- all of him is. He checked in at 22 1/2 inches long and weighed in at a hefty 9 pounds, 11 1/2 ounces. For Lehua, life may never be the same ... Amerigo Vespucci lumbered into Honolulu yesterday. Oh, not the famous Italian sailor for whom America was named, but the three-masted and fully-rigged sailing ship that's now a training vessel for the Italian Naval Academy. And no jokes about traveling in reverse! That was tanks in World War II ...

Helping Hahn

YOUNG Hilary Hahn, 22, named best Young Classical Musician for 2001 by Time magazine, will be guesting with the Honolulu Symphony for the opening work of the 2002-03 Halekulani Masterworks Season. She'll perform two Bach concertos Sept. 13 and15 at the Blaisdell's Honolulu Concert Hall, joined by the orchestra's concertmaster Ignace ("Iggy") Jang. Hahn began playing violin a month before her fourth birthday. Anyone suddenly feel their kids are slooooow ... Master Hong Liu, one of the few Qi Gong grandmasters left, will conduct a two-day natural healing workshop at the Prince Kuhio Hotel Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. It's not cheap at $395 but if it helps to manage pain, stress and depression as it claims, it should be worth it. Phone Joyce Settle at 377-1512 for more info ...

FEELING a tad folksy? Ron Bright will be holding auditions for his production of "Fiddler on the Roof" at Windward Community College's new Paliku Theater at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 3, 4 and 5. It's the first major production for Bright and the theater this year, the 30th anniversary of the WCC ... And as a thank you to teachers throughout the State, Kumu Kahua is holding a teacher appreciation night Friday at the theater on Merchant and Bethel. Teachers can purchase tickets to see Edward Sakamoto's work, "Aloha Las Vegas," for just $5 tomorrow night ...

Tracing Traci

SUDDENLY I feel like "Mr. Trace, keener than most people," as Bob & Ray would have it. But for those tracking former Miss Hawaii Traci Toguchi (and what warm-blooded man isn't?) she'll be singing the National Anthem to kick off the Okinawan Festival at the Kapiolani Bandstand Saturday morning. Then she'll join Wayne Takamine and his quartet for music at the Ok-Fest that afternoon. She'll also appear at the Festival on Sunday at 3 p.m. with Zanuck Lindsey. Traci will also likely be hyping one of her favorite indulgences, the andagi. Relax, it's only an Okinawan doughnut ...
