Longtime North Shore community leader Fern Reidell Hayes, 87, died Saturday in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Hayes served on the board of directors and as president of the auxiliary for Kahuku Hospital, served as a civil disaster warden for Oahu Civil Defense and was a member of the Outdoor Circle, the Neighborhood Watch program and the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Mission at Waimea Bay.

In 1997 she was chosen the Outstanding Senior Volunteer of the Year for the City and County of Honolulu. Hayes was a Pupukea resident from 1973 until she moved to the Hawaii Kai Retirement Center earlier this year.

Hayes is survived by sisters Myra Barthelow of San Jose, Calif., Doris Richardson of Mesa, Ariz., and Cleo Hutchison of Vancouver, Wash.; niece Elinor Campbell of Santa Rosa; and grandnephews David Campbell of Waimanalo and Dan Campbell of Albuquerque, N.M.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Honolulu.
