Dread topped
Guam bash

LOCAL "Reggae Ambassador" Marty Dread is back in town after spending the weekend in Guam. He headlined the "Typhoon Chataan Relief Bash," a benefit concert that raised money for the American Red Cross's Guam Chapter. Organized and promoted by KUAM Careforce, the benefit also featured a number of bands from Guam, along with Dread's performance.

This weekend, head over to Jaron's in Kailua on Friday or Aloha Tower Marketplace's Rodeo Cantina on Saturday and get irie with Dread and his band: Kaipo Haleakala, Danyel London, Joel Shenker and Chaka Taylor. Both performances start at 10:30 p.m. and feature the single "Wicked & Wild," currently getting airplay on local radio stations ...

SINCE I'M not much of a wine drinker, I've never really wanted to check out any of those wine pairings offered at restaurants around town. Brew Moon Restaurant & Microbrewery caught my attention, however, when I heard about the "Brew Master's Guide to Pairing Beer and Cuisine" taking place tomorrow night.

Starting at 6 p.m., this beer pairing features specialty pupus selected by the brewmaster to go with different brews available at the restaurant. Happy-hour prices will also be in effect until 8 p.m. for those who want to drink a bit more. Call 262-6719 for more info ...

SOME OF the world's most daring cliff divers will converge on Lanai this weekend when the Red Bull World Championship Diving Competition drops in on Saturday. Participants will compete for a share of more than $15,000 in prize money, jumping off an 80-foot cliff into just 25 feet of water.

If you want to check out Saturday's craziness yourself without having to jump off a cliff, catch a flight to Maui and spend the day onboard a Trilogy Excursions catamaran. Spectator boats will leave Lahaina Harbor and Kaanapali Beach at 9 a.m. for a day of snorkeling and food along with the contest. Tickets cost $159 per person (ask for the 20 percent kamaaina discount) and include breakfast, lunch and snorkeling gear. Call 888-628-4800 ...

FINALLY, be sure to pick up a Star-Bulletin this Friday -- yours truly will debut a new feature called "Barfly" in the Weekend section. Each week, I'll visit a different neighborhood watering hole and share my findings with you. Check it out ...
