Waianae gave Kapolei a harsh introduction to varsity-level football last night with a 28-0 preseason victory at Raymond Torii Field.

Waianae running back Sautia Lave rumbled for 80 yards and a touchdown to lead one of the state's most storied programs past the Hurricanes, the Oahu Interscholastic Association's newest varsity team.

Searider quarterback Uilau Faliuga recovered from a shaky start to complete 7 of 9 passes for 105 yards and a score and the Waianae defense, led by linebacker Kevin Kauweloa, registered four sacks and came up with a goal-line stand to frustrate the Hurricanes.

"It was what I expected, to tell you the truth," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "We were inconsistent. Defensively we played pretty well in the first half, but we were inconsistent.

"There's a lot to build on. I was happy with the effort and I can attribute a lot of the problems to their inexperience. I think we will be much better next week."

Kapolei, which advanced to last year's OIA junior varsity championship game, used an option attack to move the ball effectively early in the contest, but the Hurricanes couldn't overcome two turnovers against the perennial OIA power Seariders. The Hurricanes accounted for 180 total yards, 160 coming on the ground.

Waianae took advantage of Kapolei's turnovers late in the first quarter to take a 13-0 lead into halftime. Kauweloa's interception led to Lave's 4-yard scoring run with 38.4 seconds left in the first quarter.

Ikaika Aikala recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Chad Rodrigues scored on a 7-yard run one play later.

Kapolei drove to the Waianae 1-yard line with less than a minute remaining. But Waianae stuffed the Hurricanes on the next two running plays and forced two incompletions to thwart the Hurricanes.

Waianae extended its lead in the third period with a 10-play, 89-yard drive that chewed up 5:21 off the clock and ended with Faliuga's 31-yard touchdown toss to Chris Lave. Chevy Teves closed the scoring with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.

Waianae coach Dan Matsumoto was pleased with the Seariders' ability to run the ball as they racked up 156 yards on the ground. But he also knows there's much to be done before next week's OIA regular-season opener.

"We still need to work out our kinks, the scary part is we come in against (state champion) Kahuku next," Matsumoto said. "We need to wake up quick, we need to execute better than what we did tonight."
