Several newcomers to the Hawaii Wahine soccer program made an early statement last night in the exhibition match with Douglas College from British Columbia at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park Stadium.

Carmen Calpo, a freshman from Pearl City High School, needed only 52 seconds to score her first of three goals for the Wahine in their 7-0 victory.

"I thought we started a little shaky until we found our feet," said UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing. "We have a lot of new quality players getting to know each other. I still see gaps out there, but we can clean that up."

Hawaii controlled the opening half with the exception of three or four long balls by the Royals that forced UH goalkeeper Jennifer Churchill to roam off her line to gather in the futile attempts.

At the 18:26 mark, Calpo one-timed a deflected ball from 15 yards out on the right side, then Erin Quattromani, who is doing graduate work after transferring from Stanford, sent a pass to Natasha Kai on the right side. Kai headed the ball back to the left where Calpo scored her second goal from 6 yards out.

Calpo recorded No. 3 at 70:19. Ali Hamilton tried to clear the ball. It hit Calpo in the stomach and bounced forward. She dribbled once and sent a cross toward the left side. Fortunately for Calpo, the ball didn't swing back toward the middle of the field, but sailed high and straight, hitting the side net just inside the left post.

Seline Williams, a freshman from Kamehameha, who started on the back line, said, "It was fun to get to play a game after practicing against ourselves, especially in front of the home crowd."
