Hawaii earns spot
in Legion playoffs



Hawaii suffered its first loss of its region in the American Legion tournament yesterday, losing 17-11 to Nevada.

Hawaii won its two previous games by a combined 23-8 score. Those two wins guaranteed Hawaii a spot in today's playoffs.

Kaimuki loses in Cal Ripken: Kaimuki dropped its first game of round-robin play in the Cal Ripken World Series at Mattoon, Ill., yesterday, falling to a team from Effingham, Ill., 4-1.

Kaimuki plays today at noon Hawaii time against Little Rock, Ark. The Cal Ripken World Series involves youths 12 and under.

Bragado and Wood out in round of 16

Danalee Bragado of Honolulu and Ali Wood made it into the round of 16 of the Women's Chinese Open in Maoming, China, but lost there yesterday.

Bragado and Wood beat Japan's Ryoko Tokuno and Chiaki Kusuhara 21-17, 21-16 in the last game of pool play but dropped their first game in the round of 16 to Italy's Lucilla Perrotta and Daniela Gattelli 21-13, 21-18. Bragado-Wood came in ninth to earn $3,900.

Amemiya on tap at Quarterback Club

Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director Keith Amemiya will discuss the high school football doubleheader between Hawaii and California teams at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Joining Amemiya will be nationally ranked sharpshooter Ryan Tanoue and Kaipolani Wallwork, who is a defensive tackle on the Hawaiian Legends women's football team.

The Quarterback Club also will honor the outstanding sports persons for the month of July, 10-year-old Michelle Dudley and 82-year-old Shoichi Tanouye. They were named outstanding female and male athletes of the 2002 Aloha State Games.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant and the program begins at noon.

Aloha Section PGA gets title sponsor

For the second year in a row, Taylor Made-adidas Golf will be the title sponsor of this week's Aloha Section PGA Assistant Professional Championship at the Ko Olina Golf Club.

The winner of the 36-hole tournament, which begins tomorrow morning at 11:30 and ends on Tuesday, will earn a spot in the 2002 Taylor Made-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship at the PGA Golf Club's South Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Oct. 24-27.

Kevin Carll will be back to defend his title.

The winner of this year's tournament will take home $2,000 of the $9,000 purse.

Tickets on sale for 2003 Mercedes Championship

Tickets for next year's winners-only Mercedes Championship at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, set for Jan. 9-12, are available in selected stores on Maui.

A season pass costs $50 through Dec. 23 and provides access to the practice rounds, pro-am and the four-day tournament.

Among those who have already qualified are Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh.

Korean Invitational set for September

The 52nd anniversary of the Korean Invitational will be held Sept. 7 and 8 at the Pali Golf Course.

Hung Soo Ahn won the inaugural tournament at the Leilehua Golf Course as a 21-year-old. It was the first of 16 titles for Ahn.

Other multiple winners included Barney Kim (10 times), Kyu Num Lee (3), Kendall Fukumoto (3), Charles Park (2) and Kendyl Ko (2).

Entry fee for the 36-hole stroke play tournament is $100. Competition for men and women will be held in four flights -- A, B, C, senior and Callaway.
