‘Excellence’ the standard
for annual juried exhibit

The Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce's annual juried exhibition begins a 10-day run at the Academy Art Center, starting Tuesday.

"Commitment to Excellence," which marks the chamber's 24th exhibit, features 70 Hawaii artists in two- and three-dimensional art and includes works by 21 invited artists.

Winners in the two-dimensional category are: first place, Romolo Valencia's "De La Tierra"; second, Jodi Endicott's "Bull"; and third, Kaui Chun's "Sonia."

Three-dimensional winners are: first, Mari Sakamoto's "Swimmers"; second, Johanette Rowley's "Me, Myself, and I"; and third, Kenny Kicklighter's "The Relationship Between Form and Edge."

An outstanding newcomer award went to Dana Teruya Len for "I Pledge Allegiance Too."

Jurors for the show were George Ellis, Tom Klobe, Marcia Morse, James Foster, Allison Wong and Wayne Kawamoto.

Invited artists this year include Reiko Brandon, Sean Browne, Satoko Dung, Dorothy Faison, Robert Hamada, Charles Higa, Anne Irons, John Koga, Hanae Mills, Rick Mills, Mary Mitsuda, Hiroki Morinoue, John Morita, Fred Roster, Mamoru Sato, Tadashi Sato, Toshiko Takaezu, Stan Tomita, Glenn Yamanoha and Doug Young.

"Commitment to Excellence" runs through Aug. 30. The Art Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission to the center, located at 1111 Victoria St. (across from Honolulu Academy of Arts), is free. Call 532-8700.
