Hawaii water polo team
tops at Maui tournament

The Hawaiian Islands water polo team, comprised of players from Iolani and Punahou schools, won the men's 18-and-under division in last week's Maui Invitational at the Kihei Aquatics Center.

Hawaiian Islands defeated Mira Costa, Calif., 6-3 in the championship game to finish the tournament undefeated.

Punahou's Robbie Fields, C.J. Smith and Forrest Schwartz and Iolani's Damon Jones were named to the all-tournament team.

UH Rainbow won the women's open division with Hawaiian Islands finishing third.

Andy Nishioka, Eko Lapp, Darcy Scott-Hosaka and Karin Van Moff of Rainbow and Annie Richardson from Hawaiian Islands were picked for the all-tournament team.

Team Maui finished third in the girls 14-and-under division.

Mililani Pony team eliminated from zone

Mililani lost to Los Alamitos, Calif., 12-4 yesterday and were eliminated from the PONY West Zone Tournament in Fullerton, Calif.

Andrew Ontai went 3-for-4 and Kamalu Crabbe had three hits and two RBIs for the Mililani Pony Division (ages 13-14) team.

In previous games, Mililani lost to Fountain Valley, Calif., 17-7 and defeated Campbell, Calif., 10-6.

Abubo triumphs in first-round heat

Hawaii's Megan Abubo came straight from Hollywood to Lacanau, France, and easily won her first-round heat in the Gotcha Pro surf contest.

She had been in Hollywood for a showing of "Blue Crush," the new film in which she appears.

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly also advanced to the next round.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow.

Wahine volleyball tickets go on sale

Season tickets for the Hawaii women's volleyball team went on sale yesterday.

Tickets are $155 for single seats in the lower bowl, $115 for adult tickets in the upper section, $100 for senior citizens in the upper section and $70 for students ages 4-18 and UH students.

An additional $40 premium donation for all lower-level seating will be charged.

The team starts its season Aug. 30 by hosting the 15th Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. The tournament includes three teams that finished in the Top 25 last season -- Ohio State, Colorado and UCLA.

Tickets can be purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center or by calling 944-2697.

Kapiliela tops winners in Offshore Regatta

Kapiliela, skippered by Ken Kaan, won the PH 1 class in the Waikiki Yacht Club Summer Offshore Regatta.

Boomerang, with John Spadaro as skipper, finished second, followed by Skip Winterbottom's Desperado.

Ken Morrison's Hagar II won the PH 2 class, while Mike Welsh's Squad Car and Curtis Collins' Tiare Bounty II.

In the PH 3 class, Craig Wicke's Hi Ho Silver took the top spot over Margaret and John Haig's Bondi Tram.

The regatta was held off of Koko Head on Saturday and off Ewa Beach on Sunday.
