The city is installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of South King and Hausten streets, said Cheryl Soon, director of the city Department of Transportation Services.

The signal will be between Star Market and the Down to Earth Natural Foods store. It will take about eight weeks to install, Soon said.

State Rep. Scott Saiki (D, McCully-Moiliili) said residents from the area have been calling him for two years with complaints about the dangers of crossing South King Street. The Moiliili Senior Center and an seniors housing unit in the area create heavy pedestrian traffic, Saiki said.

"It's a big deal for the residents in the area," he said. "It's a great win for the community because the seniors will definitely be safer because of the traffic light."

Soon said: "There's been discussion on this for a long time. "A lot of people deserve credit on this one, not the least of which is (former Councilman) Andy Mirikitani, the neighborhood board, the City Council and my own traffic engineers."
