Arthur Lyman’s 90th
birthday took just 1 day

BACK in August of 1997, I wrote about the hardy patriarch of the missionary Lyman family of the Big Isle, "Uncle' Arthur Lyman, and his 85th birthday blast, a three-day affair, and ended with "Lyman invited everyone back for his 90th birthday in 2002. Don't bet against it happening." Those who took that advice may now collect. Uncle Arthur again toasted his legendary number of friends, many of whom flew to Hilo from Honolulu for his 90th, held on but a single day this year. Five years ago I mentioned that Uncle Arthur is godfather to restaurateur Dickie Furtado, whose dad, Richard Furtado, was Lyman's Punahou roommate, and Dickie is, in turn, godfather to Lyman's son, Nakoa, now 15. Hardy boys indeed! ...

THERE were a couple of familiar faces at Roy's in Hawaii Kai Saturday night. Both actor Danny Glover and "My Wife & Kids" star Damon Wayans chose to dine there, coincidentally on the same night ... Laurie Tam reports that the book, "Writ of Execution," mentioned here recently, was written not but a man named Peter O'Shaughnessy, but by sisters Pamela & Mary O'Shaughnessy, using the pen named Perri O'Shaughnessy. Mary lives in California and Pamela in Hawaii, and part of the story takes place in Duke's ...

DeLima dilemma

WHEN comic Frank DeLima appeared on the Perry & Price Hanohano Room show to promote his new KHON game show, "Mahjong Party" (not to be confused, one assumes, with "Jan Ken Po"), the radio listeners missed out on a memorable moment. Only those in the audience and P&P themselves watched with delight as a group of Marines rose and stood at attention when DeLima approached their table and sang the Marine anthem ...

THERE was a photo on the Star-Bulletin's bulletin board of staffer Nancy McNamee leaping out of an airplane at 14,000 feet and landing uneventfully. Fellow staffer Burl Burlingame points out that Nancy's latest landing was only from about 4 feet, but it was a much harder landing -- coming as it did from a careening motorcycle that sent her face-first into the pavement. You've heard of road rage? Well, Nancy is suffering from road rash, but trouper that she is, she was quickly back to work ...

IT came as no surprise in these quarters that two men named in the top 10 sous chefs nationwide by Bertolli USA were both trained by local chef extraordinaire Alan Wong. Being presented the award in New York last week were chefs Lance Kosaka of Alan Wong's Restaurant and Steven Ariel of the Pineapple Room ...

Rolling Requiem

HAWAII will be a part of the world-wide "Rolling Requiem" on Sept. 11 with choirs in most time zones all singing the Mozart Requiem at the time of the first attack on the World Trade Center, 8:46 a.m. The event begins in New Zealand and, in all likelihood, will end with the Hawaii performance at 8:46 a.m. at Kawaiahao Church. Susan Duprey of HPU will conduct and the organist is John McCraray, organist emeritus of St. Andrew's and Iolani. Soloists are Malia Kaai, Lorna Mount, Ella Edwards, Joseph Petit and Timothy Carney ...
