Condors fly
to frisbee title

Steve Dugan hit Shep Frankel with a near-perfect pass from five yards out in overtime to give the Santa Barbara Condors a 14-12 win and the World Flying Disk Federation Championship at Waipio Peninsula Park yesterday.

The title gave the Condors the second of the frisbee world's two major championships. Santa Barbara already held the U.S. title before taking the WFDF title away from DoG: Death or Glory.

The teams were tied at 12 after 100 minutes of regulation, before the Condors put the contest away with successive scores in the win-by-two format.

Riot (Seattle, Wash) beat Ozone (Atlanta, Ga.) 17-8 for the women's title and the Donner Party of Lake Tahoe, Calif., beat Hang Time of Dallas 17-9 in the mixed final.

Metzger andWong lose on first day

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. >> Defending champions Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong of Honolulu were upset yesterday in the first day of the Michelob Light Manhattan Beach Open.

Metzger-Wong, seeded third, were eliminated by 14th seeds Scott Davenport and Eli Fairfield. The winner advance to today's quarterfinals against Hilo's Alika Williams and partner Paul Baxter. Williams-Baxter ousted former Hawaii setter Albert Hannemann and partner Jeff Nygaard yesterday.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals are Hawaii's Mike Lambert and Lee LeGrande.

Frazier and Englert to meet QB Club

New Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier and chancellor Peter Englert will be speaking at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Joining them will be Hula Bowl Maui president Dick Schaller.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda restaurant in Honolulu with the program at noon.

The club also announced that 10-year old Michelle Dudley and 82-year old Shoichi Tanouye are the Sports Persons of the Month for July.

They both won multiple gold medals at the Aloha State Games in swimming and track.

Roughwater swim clinic set for Aug. 17

Previous winners Joe Lileikis and Rick Heltzel will conduct the Aug. 17 Waikiki Roughwater Swim Clinic at Duke Kahanamoku Beach next to the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

The clinic is scheduled for 8-9:30 a.m. and will offer tips on ocean swimming with an emphasis on the roughwater course.

The 33rd Roughwater swim is scheduled for Labor Day, Sept. 2. The 2.384-mile swim starts at San Souci Beach and finishes in front of the Hilton pier.

Barbers Pt. Invitational

The 2002 Barbers Point Invitational golf tournament is set for Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

Competition at the Barbers Point golf course will be held in four flights -- championship (0-4 handicap), A (5-9), B (10-15) and senior (age 50 and older as of Aug. 31). The field will be cut after 36 holes.

The fee, which includes one practice round, is $90 for military and $120 for all others.

Entry forms for the 54-hole tournament are available at all military and select Oahu golf courses. Applications are also available by fax -- call 682-2098 to request a copy.

Mark West is the defending champion.

Gilder and Green to play in Turtle Bay tournament

Bob Gilder and Hubert Green will make the trip to Hawaii to compete in the Turtle Bay Championships, set for Oct. 4-6 at the Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course.

Gilder, in his second year on the Senior PGA Tour, is No. 2 behind Hale Irwin on the money list with $1,323,209. He has four victories on the senior circuit, including this year's SBC Senior Open and FleetBoston Classic.

Green, on the Senior Tour since 1996, is coming off a win in the Lightpath Long Island Classic at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, N.Y., where he beat Irwin in a seven-hole playoff for the title.

Gilder and Green will join Irwin, Don Pooley and Dana Quigley, among others, in the three-day tournament.
