Corrections and clarifications

>> UH football practices will take place from 7 to 9 a.m. Aug. 26-29. A graphic on Page B7 yesterday contained incorrect times for the practices.

>> A weekly color TV book begins today and will come out in the Star-Bulletin every Sunday. A caption on Page D4 yesterday mistakenly said a color TV listing would be produced daily.

Head-on collision sends 3 to hospital

A woman was injured critically and two other people were injured seriously in an apparent head-on collision yesterday between a Dodge Caravan and a Honda Accord in Makua.

Fire officials said the Dodge was traveling town-bound on Farrington Highway in Makua about 4 p.m. when it collided with the Honda Accord traveling in the opposite direction.

The Honda Accord caught fire and bystanders pulled the driver, who was not fully conscious, out, fire officials said. They then attached a rope to the Honda and pulled the rope with another vehicle to separate the two vehicles, preventing the fire from spreading to the Dodge.

The driver of the Dodge, a 49-year-old man, was pinned in the vehicle and firefighters had to extricate him with the Jaws of Life. His passenger, a woman in her 30s, also was pinned in the vehicle and needed to be extricated.

Fire officials said both drivers received chest and leg injuries. The woman may have suffered head and chest injuries.

All three were flown to Queen's Medical Center. The man was in guarded condition last night while the woman was in critical condition. The driver of the Honda, identified as a male minor, also was being treated at the hospital but his condition was not available.
