Once again, the Hula Bowl Maui will have a strong Hawaii Warriors connection.

Four UH players were mailed invitations yesterday to play in the Feb. 1 game at War Memorial Stadium.

Offensive linemen Vince Manuwai and Lui Fuata, linebacker Chris Brown and Mosi Tatupu Special Teams Award nominee Sean Butts are the invitees, Hula Bowl general manager Dick Schaller said.

"They're four very outstanding players. We know some have been invited to other games, but we hope to see them at the Hula Bowl," Schaller said. "Also, like other years, we hope to invite more UH players later in the fall."

Brown, who was also invited to the East-West Shrine game, said he looks forward to the Hula Bowl.

"It will be an honor to play in front of the Hawaii crowd one more time," he said.

Schaller said tickets can be purchased for the Hula Bowl by calling 1-808-871-4141.

Brown was an all-Western Athletic Conference first-teamer last year after leading the Warriors with 124 tackles.

Right guard Manuwai was second-team all-WAC, and is being billed by UH as a candidate for the Outland and Lombardi awards.

After 21 consecutive starts at left tackle, Fuata moves to center this fall.

Butts goes into camp as a top contender to start at safety. Last year he blocked four kicks and was outstanding at the punt coverage gunner position.

Veteran players report at UH today, joining rookies who came in earlier in the week. Practices start Saturday.

"Physically, I'm there," Brown said. "Mentally, one day in camp and it'll be all good."

Hawaii coach June Jones said he and his staff are eager for the start of camp, too.

"We're all anxious and ready to get started," he said.

... In 1979, freshman linebacker Steve Lehor led UH with 117 tackles as the Rainbows went 6-5 overall and 3-4 in their first season of Western Athletic Conference competition.

All-WAC tackle Tom Tuinei and safety Dana McLemore also made strong contributions to a defense that limited five opponents to 12 points or fewer. Safety Blane Gaison filled in at quarterback because of injuries, and led Hawaii to a 29-17 season-closing win against Arizona State.

Lehor was named a freshman All-American honorable mention by The Sporting News. He also had an outstanding sophomore season but was hampered by injuries later in his UH career.

Today, Lehor is the owner of La Costa Auto Sales in Montclair, Calif.
