Former St. Louis
lineman cited
for assault, vandalism

From staff and wire reports

LINCOLN, Neb. >> Tamotu "Junior" Tagoa'i, a guard on the Nebraska football team from Hauula, has been cited for two counts of misdemeanor assault and a count of vandalism, the Lincoln Journal Star reported yesterday.

Tagoa'i, a St. Louis School graduate, and his girlfriend had accompanied a female friend to an apartment last Thursday to help her move out, police spokeswoman Officer Katherine Finnell said.

A 21-year-old woman who lives at the apartment alleged Tagoa'i slapped her in the face, knocking her to the ground, when she ordered him to leave after he stomped on a small, 3-year-old berry tree, Finnell said.

Tagoa'i then allegedly followed the woman back inside her apartment and hit her boyfriend and damaged a door, Finnell said.

After retrieving a cell phone from outside, the woman returned to her apartment and tried to lock the door. She alleged Tagoa'i then punched the door so hard when she was trying to fasten a dead bolt, its frame came off. Tagoa'i's girlfriend then calmed him and persuaded him to leave, Finnell said.

Responding to a police request, Finnell said Tagoa'i turned himself in later that day.

Nebraska coach Frank Solich said it was too early to determine whether the team will take disciplinary action. Tagoa'i practiced on Tuesday.

"It's my understanding there were eyewitnesses," Solich said. "Junior has a lawyer. We'll just have to see how it all plays out.

"We won't presume he's guilty until we see how it all transpires."

A court date was scheduled Aug. 30.
