GRANTS

>> The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii has awarded $10,000 to the Institute for Human Services, Oahu's emergency homeless shelter, for sanitation procedures.

>> Pearlridge Center's Skycab, Oahu's only monorail, will provide over $200,000 in equipment to the Honolulu Fire and Police departments, the Oahu Civil Defense Agency and the city's Emergency Medical Services Division. Skycab will donate fares collected from July through September of this year to the "Building a Better Community, Together" program, and half the proceeds from October 2002 through December 2003 will be donated.

>> Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center has received $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts, Challenge America Grant, and $20,000 from the Maui County Department of Housing and Human Concerns. The grants will assist in funding the Arts for Maui Youth, a program offering art instruction to youth at risk, ages 13-18.

SCHOLASTIC AWARDS

>> Nine outstanding St. Andrew's Priory School students have won the following awards at commencement exercises: Katie Omura, Grace Putnam Ames Memorial Scholarship Award; Ella Soto-Edwards, Class of 1952 Award; Leslie Ann Wong, Ka Mea Ho'ohiki Award; Kim Hirota, Father Fred G. Minuth Scholar/Athlete Award; Randi Anne Miura, Priory Alumnae Association's College Award; Tara Guillozet, Caroline Lee Ornelles Memorial Scholarship Award; Krystle Osaki, Bishop's Award; Yu-Tsu (Debbie) Liu, Valedictorian; Darene Matsuoka, Head of School Award.

>> Mariel Romero of Mililani, Bo Kim of Wahiawa, Adeline Del Rosario of Aiea, Aaron Isaki of Honolulu, Timothy Kelly of Kaneohe and Aldrich Ricalde of Ewa Beach have received $1,500 scholarships under the second annual Scholarships for Military Children Program.

>> Crystal Yuki Shigeta of Moanalua High School has received a $3,000 Deans' Scholar Award from Seattle Pacific University.

>> St. Andrew's Priory School has named Grace Onoye Sono- da its 2002 Alumna of the Year. A graduate of the 1951 class, Sonoda has provided leadership in fund raising and made generous donations to the school.

Police seek man who stole woman's purse

Police want the public's help in identifying a male suspect in a purse-snatching that occurred on June 26, fronting 726 Sheridan St.

Police said at 8:30 p.m. a male suspect approached the victim from behind and grabbed her purse. The 34-year-old female initially held on to her purse and was pushed to the ground and dragged several feet, police said.

The suspect fled on foot with the purse, heading mauka on Sheridan Street and then Koko Head on South King Street.

The victim suffered bruises and scratches to her face and left hand.

CENTRAL OAHU

Waipio man accused of threats using 3 knives

Police are seeking terroristic threatening charges today against a 23-year-old Waipio man who allegedly threatened his friend, 25, three different times early this morning with three different knives at a Mililani apartment.

The two had been drinking at the apartment of the victim's girlfriend's apartment on Kipapa Drive.

The men got into an argument, and the suspect allegedly threatened his friend three times with three knives he took from the kitchen.

After a brief scuffle, the suspect fled on foot. Police were called and found the suspect a block away.

The victim identified the man, and the suspect was arrested at 2:35 a.m. today on three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Woman arrested after alleged machete threat

A 46-year-old Kailua woman was arrested yesterday morning after allegedly making threats with a machete as her car was about to be towed away.

The resident manager of her apartment building was having her car towed for trespassing because it was parked in another resident's stall, police said.

The woman argued with the resident manager and the tow-truck driver, and became angry because the driver would not release her car, police said.

The woman allegedly assaulted the woman manager and her husband, then went to her apartment and returned with a machete.

She then threatened the manager and the tow-truck driver with the machete before using it to cut straps that secured her vehicle to the tow wagon, police said.

The woman was arrested on two counts of terroristic threatening, two counts of third-degree assault and one count of fourth-degree criminal property damage.
