Curry-Vervloet takes title
to end youngsters’ run

Brendon Curry and Erik Vervloet beat Ikaika Jobe and Brad Lum-Tucker 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 for the Kailua Men's Night Doubles championship last night.

Curry, 30, and Vervloet, 34, stopped the phenoms by outwitting them in the first two sets and outlasting them in the third. Jobe, 19, and Lum-Tucker, 20, came into the tournament unseeded and beat the top seed in the quarterfinals.

Payton, Cassell coming to Punahou

A youth basketball camp featuring NBA players Gary Payton and Sam Cassell will be held Aug. 14-17 at Punahou School.

The Give-N-Go camp will be facilitated by Glen Graham, shooting coach for Jason Kidd and other NBA players, and directed by Punahou alum Michael Torres for boys and girls ages 8-17.

Guest speakers include Nainoa Thompson, Jenai Wall, Dr. James Scott, Pal Eldredge, Dr. Gregory Yim and Chris McLachlin.

Abubo runs into Peruvian buzz saw

Peru's Sofia Mulanovich shocked Hawaii's Megan Abubo in the quarterfinals of the Havaianas Women's Pro event at Huntington Beach, Calif., yesterday.

Rochelle Ballard was Hawaii's only surfer to advance.

Hawaii's Kalani Robb and Sunny Garcia advanced in the men's contest.

Metzger-Wong ousted by 23rd seed

Eighth-seeded Stein Metzger of Honolulu and Kevin Wong of Pearl City were the last USA men's team eliminated from Austrian Open yesterday.

Todd Rogers and Sean Scott of Punahou dropped their opening match.

Offensive linemen invade QB Club

Hawaii offensive linemen Vince Manuwai and Lui Fuata will join coach Mike Cavanaugh at this week's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Also speaking will be Paul Costello and golfer Bobbi Kokx.
