Local boys make
World Series

Kaimuki advanced to the Cal Ripken World Series for 11-12-year olds on Sunday with a 3-0 win over Manoa for the Hawaii state championship.

The Kaimuki team, making its second trip to the World Series in three years, plays in Matoon, Ill., Aug. 17-26.

Cal Ripken Baseball is an age group division of Babe Ruth Baseball sponsored by the Hawaii Winter Baseball Foundation.

World Series bound: A team of Hawaii 13-year olds earned a spot in the Babe Ruth World Series with a doubleheader sweep of El Segundo on Wednesday at Napa, Calif.

Channon "Pake" Coloma was named regional series MVP and Aaron Awa and Parker McCready made the all-tournament team.

The team will represent the Pacific region in Abbeville, La., beginning Aug. 10.

One step away: Hawaii's team of 14-year olds will play its regional tournament at Fallon, Nev., beginning tomorrow.

Should they win the eight-team tournament, they would be invited to participate in their division's World Series at Clifton Park, N.Y. The tournament ends Aug. 9.

On Line Sportfishing wins Billfish Pro-Am

Mary Martin pulled a 300-point marlin out of the Pacific Ocean near Kailua-Kona yesterday to help the On Line Sportfishing team win the 25th HIBT Pro-Am.

Team On Line Sportfishing fished aboard the On Line with Captain John Llanes, Llanes' crew and boat owner Steve Zehring. They had chosen Martin to be the designated angler in the pro-am.

Seven blue marlin were tagged and released, no marlin were boated, and one ahi was weighed.

The largest ahi award went to angler Bill Troyer of team Puka Kai for his 145-pound catch.

Team Kukio took second place with Kona Gamefishing Club finishing in third, followed by Hokulia Anglers in fourth place.

Bartels gets day's best round

Hawaii's Melanie Bartels, No. 7 in the WQS rankings, put together a two-wave total of 24.51 in the second round at the Havaianas Women's Pro at Huntington Beach, Calif., yesterday.

Bartels' score was the best of the day in surging surf that is showing the first signs of an upcoming hurricane swell. Bartels won again two hours later to move on to the quarterfinals.

Joel Centeio made it to the eighth round in the men's U.S. Open at the same site.

Speed Camp running 1 last time

Hawaii defensive backs coach Rich Miano will hold his final speed and quickness clinic of the summer Sunday at St. Louis School.

Ages 9-12 will go from 9 a.m. to noon, while ages 13 and up will be go from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The cost is $25 and applications are available at Jamba Juice and Sports Authority locations.
