Xeriscape matters

Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens and the Halawa Xeriscape Garden join forces for water-wise landscaping with workshops and a plant sale tomorrow:

>> Take in a xeriscape workshop at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, 9 a.m. to noon. Sessions include "Intro to Landscaping" by Paul Weissich; "What Water-Thrifty Plants Can Do" by Denise de Costa; "Principles of Xeriscaping, Zoning and Good Design" by Jason Umemoto; "Color in the Xeriscape" by Mark Takemoto; and "So Many Choices!" by Heidi Bornhorst.

Authors Weissich ("Plants for Tropical Landscapes") and Bornhorst ("Growing Native Hawaiian Plants") will sign copies of their books.

Cost is $40. The garden is at the end of Luluku Road in Kaneohe. Call 537-1708 to register.

>> Halawa Xeriscape Garden's open house and less-thirsty plant sale takes place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with guided xeriscape garden tours, workshops on "Introduction to Xeriscape" and "Native Hawaiian Plant Propagation," plant-craft demonstrations, plant giveaways and more.

Funds raised from the annual free event support educational programs at the garden and scholarships promoting water conservation.

For security reasons, no tours will be offered of the underground pumping station, which has been closed since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The garden is at 99-1268 Iwaena St. in Halawa Valley. Call 527-6113, or 488-8523 on the day of the sale.

On deck

The August project of Home Depot University focuses on the basics of building a deck.

Do-it-yourselfers will receive start-to-finish instruction in four classes on deck planning, building, stairs and railings, finishing and container gardening. Classes are 7 p.m. Fridays at Home Depot's Pearl City branch. Call 455-1200 to register.

Orchids abloom

The Ewa Orchid Society will showcase its best at the Leeward Orchid & Plant Show, Aug. 9 through 11.

This year's theme is "A Crown of Orchids" and will give clubs islandwide a chance to display their most colorful and creative offerings. The event features daily giveaways, demonstrations, flower and plant sales, and more.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 10 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11.

A donation of $2 is requested. Call 676-8825.
