Quilting on the run

Dianne Kaneshiro, training coordinator of Quilter's Nook, says there are several methods for making a T-shirt quilt, all using basic techniques.

Most are organized and precise, she said. Kaneshiro handcrafted a different type for her son of Harley-Davidson shirts, cutting out the emblems, designs and slogans, then overlaying them on black T-shirt fabric. "All the sayings and things pop out at you; it's more abstract."

Quilter's Nook, 800 S. Beretania St., Suite 210, sells quilting supplies and offers classes, but not a specific class for T-shirt quilts, though the store has had several inquiries. Kaneshiro would consider organizing one for a group of at least three.

Classes are $6.50 per hour; it takes about 10 class hours to learn the skills, she said. The shop is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 536-6931.

Kwilts 'n Koa specializes in Hawaiian quilts, but owner Kathy Tsark said techniques learned in her classes can be applied to any type of quilt.

The shop offers materials for Hawaiian quilts and classes, limited to six people, at $10 an hour. Students are given a 20-inch quilt as their project and, once done, take it home as their certificate of completion.

Classes meet once a week. It takes about four classes to finish a project, but Tsark said students can opt to continue classes beyond that first quilt.

Kwilts 'n Koa is at 1126 12th Ave., Suite 101. Call 735-2300.
