The Peppers become
a bike gang (sort of)

IT'S kind of hard to imagine singer Luther Vandross and the Red Hot Chili Peppers sharing the same room, but they were, in a manner of speaking, Tuesday night. Both Vandross and the Chili Peppers chose that night to dine at Roy's in Hawaii Kai, but understandably the Peppers made the most impact. They dined in the banquet room with a party of 32. One other person in the restaurant that night, businessman Paul Klink, cracked up when the group departed. The Peppers chose to ride rented mopeds while their entourage traveled in limo-vans ... Klink is now off to Chiba, Japan, for the ground breaking of his first Japanese Dave & Buster's location, an 85,000 square foot eatery slated to open by the end of 2003, the first of four D&B's on Klink's plate ...

DUKE'S is to die for? One of the characters in Peter O'Shaughnessy's new book, "Writ of Execution," claims he's spent most of his life in Duke's and will probably die there. The New York Times best-selling author has set his courtroom drama on Oahu, and some characters in the book refer to Duke's as the place to go for drinks and relaxation. As for the folks at Duke's, they'd just as soon not be known as the place to go to die ...

Many a Miss Hawaii

SOME 17 winners of the Miss Hawaii contest, ranging from B.J. Johnson (1949) to Denby Dung (2001), are expected to be on hand at the Honolulu Country Club Aug. 7 when the first Miss Hawaii, Yun Tau Zane is remembered. Monies collected from ticket sales will go to a scholarship fund in Zane's name. Many of the title holders will perform, backed by Randy Hongo. Traci Toguchi ('95) and Billie Takaki (2000) were booked to appear on Channel 2's morning show today, with Toguchi doubling as musical guest. And as if to prove she needs little sleep, Toguchi will also be performing at Brew Moon today from 9 p.m. to midnight ...

Two Wongs? Almost

WHEN some of Hawaii's top chefs challenge each other at the ovens for a TV program called "Paradise Chef Duel" at Restaurant Row tomorrow at 10 a.m., the secret ingredient each must use in his original dishes will be selected and presented to each by Hawaii's top chef, Alan Wong. What many don't realize is that while the host of the show, to air on KGMB Aug. 17 and Sept. 7, is David Rosengarten, co-anchor of "In Food Today" and host of "Taste" on the Food Network, his co-host here will be the tasty Alice Inoue, who incidentally, is Wong's fiancee ...

This "Bud's" for you

CASTING director Garrison True is bursting with pride. A student who was in his youth acting workshop in Honolulu, Katija Pevec, now 14, has landed a role in "Air Bud Spikes Back," the fifth in a series of features about a golden retriever who plays football. OK, it's not "A Beautiful Mind," but it's showbiz. Katija's parents, attorney Pevec and wife Michelle moved to L.A. to allow Katija an opportunity to attend the High School of the Arts (along with her brother, Alecks) and pursue an acting career. It's now underway -- she's shooting this week on location in Vancouver, B.C.
