Republican gubernatorial candidate Linda Lingle has raised $1.5 million in campaign contributions during the first six months of this year, while Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andy Anderson has raised $220,000.

Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono and state Rep. Ed Case (D, Manoa), other major candidates for governor, are expected to file state campaign supplemental spending reports, along with the rest of the 400-plus candidates seeking office this fall, before the filing deadline of 4:30 p.m. today.

Lingle's report, filed yesterday, showed she raised $1,533,977 between Jan. 1 and June 30. The former Maui mayor lists a cash-on-hand campaign war chest of $1.12 million.

In a news release, Lingle said there were 4,803 people who donated an average of $318 to the campaign. Some 2,980 or 62 percent were first-time donors, the statement said.

"We are getting thousands of contributions from all kinds of people on all of the islands even though our state's economy is the worst it's ever been," Lingle said. "People are willing to contribute $300 so that we can improve life for the people of Hawaii."

The statement said 73 percent of the contributions came from Hawaii residents and companies while 27 percent came from mainland contributors. Next to Hawaii, California gave the most of any other state to the Lingle campaign.

Anderson's report shows he raised $219,865 during this period, but because of debts and loans, his campaign posts a cash balance of $44,749. Anderson has $99,988 in debts - $70,202 in loans and $29,786 in unpaid expenditures.

Of the $70,202 in loans, all but $7,000 were loans Anderson made to his own campaign.

Lingle's top expenditures were for professional staffing services. Anderson's top campaign buy was for $25,831 to Q Mark Researching & Polling for a poll earlier this year.
