Likelike, Ala Moana, H-3 lanes to be shut

The Kaneohe-bound lanes of the Likelike Highway will be closed from Valley View Drive starting from 7 p.m. today until 8 a.m. tomorrow for tunnel maintenance and cleaning.

The H-3 freeway's right lane in the Kaneohe-bound direction will also be closed weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through August for structural survey work.

Two Ewa-bound lanes of Ala Moana near Alakea Street will be coned for underground cable work 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Sunset on the Beach to be at Queen's Surf

Sunset on the Beach returns to Waikiki's Queen's Surf Beach this weekend under the sponsorship of Aston Hotels & Resorts.

Tonight's movie is "Chicken Run" and tomorrow's is "The Mummy." There will also be food booths, a craft fair and other entertainment. The program begins at 5 p.m. each night. The movies start at 7:30.

KCC to hold annual free health festival

Kapiolani Community College and the Culinary Institute of the Pacific will host a health and healing festival, "Ke Ola Hou Healthy Hawaii," from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday on KCC's lawn.

Charene Luke, director for the event, said it will be the first activity of its scale and kind from the Office of Continuing Health Education.

Native Hawaiian healing and long-term care will be featured. Health industry professionals will participate in health education booths, breakout sessions and workshops.

The free festival will include demonstrations, Hawaiian and contemporary music, food, and arts and crafts. Workshops on long-term care and aging will be offered for a $10 fee for those who pre-register.

KCC this year launched a long-term care series on public television, and an ElderCare Web site was established to assist seniors with resources and information concerning aging and long-term care.

IHS seeks backpacks for homeless children

The Institute for Human Services is appealing to the public to help provide new backpacks for homeless children returning to school.

"Keiki Kokua Appeal" is a request to help the schoolchildren served by IHS, Oahu's largest emergency homeless shelter. Up to 60 homeless children are served by IHS at any given time. Many are on a year-round school schedule and will begin school next week.

Those interested in helping may drop off new backpacks at the IHS Women and Families Shelter at 546 Kaaahi St. For more information, call 845-7150 or visit www.ihs-hawaii.org

>> First Hawaiian Foundation, the charitable arm of First Hawaiian Bank, awarded $5,000 to J. Walter Cameron Center's 2002 fund drive in Maui. The center houses and supports nonprofit agencies that give assistance in health and social services, culture and the arts.

>> The Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation has donated $25,000 to Child & Family Service to support its efforts to assist people still affected by the Sept. 11 tragedy. Those people include the unemployed, families separated by a military deployment, and victims of domestic violence. The agency serves more that 28,000 people each month throughout the state.

>> Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii has received $12,500 from the James and Abigail Campbell Foundation, and $7,500 from The Hawaii Justice Foundation. The first grant will help the agency's Na Keiki Law Center, which assists about 1,000 children each year. The second will help provide free legal services for the indigent and low-income population.

Help sought in finding missing Makiki man

Police are asking for the public's help in locating a Makiki man who has been missing for nearly a week.

Benjamin K. Ah Yen, 63, was last seen 8 a.m. Sunday at his Makiki residence. Police said Ah Yen appeared to be disoriented and has not been seen at places he frequents.

Ah Yen is 5-foot-6, 145 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing a blue aloha shirt, blue jeans and blue sneakers.

Anyone with information about Ah Yen is asked to call Honolulu Police Department missing persons detail officer Joe Self at 529-3064 or the department's Criminal Investigation Division at 529-3115.

Suspect in robbery at pool hall is at large

Police are asking for the public's help in finding an 18-year-old man wanted on a state grand jury warrant for first-degree robbery.

Jason Kamealoa Perez was indicted May 16 for alleged involvement in a November 2001 robbery. Police said two men robbed another man at gunpoint at a pool hall on North Nimitz Highway.

Perez is described as 5-foot-9, 140 pounds, with a slim build, dark brown hair, brown eyes and a slight mustache. He is known to frequent the Ewa Beach area.

Anyone with information on Perez's whereabouts should call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

Firefighters put out hot spots after fire

Firefighters put out some hot spots that flared up yesterday where Thursday's brush fire in Waianae Valley started.

Two engine companies and two water tankers went to Angel's 24-Hour Towing & Used Auto Parts junkyard at 85-1330B Waianae Valley Road at about 1:30 p.m.
