Man pleads guilty to isle cocaine scheme

A 34-year-old man pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to smuggling large amounts of cocaine in May from Los Angeles to Honolulu with the intent to distribute.

Big Island police began investigating the case after learning John James Montoya would be traveling to Los Angeles to pick up cocaine, a news release by the U.S. Attorney's office stated.

Montoya traveled to Los Angeles on May 21 and checked in a cooler as an item of luggage containing 1,950 grams of cocaine and food items, and returned to Hilo through Honolulu Airport.

Montoya admitted he had previously traveled to Los Angeles on different occasions with a cooler in which he would carry drugs, which were flown back to Hawaii to be distributed.

Montoya faces a maximum term of 40 years when he is sentenced Nov. 13.

Hawaii man believed dead at Lake Shasta

LAKE SHASTA, Calif. >> The search continued yesterday for a 64-year-old Hawaii man who sheriff's officials believe drowned in Lake Shasta on Wednesday night.

The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of his wife on Maui, would be the fourth person to die in Lake Shasta this year, said Shasta County Sgt. Mark Jenkins.

The man and his daughter were boating on Elmore Bay south of Sugarloaf Marina when they decided to cool off with a jump in the lake.

Boating deputies and a seven-member dive team searched the 150-foot-deep water, but had found nothing by early evening.

Jury alleges man smuggled Asian aliens

A federal grand jury in Honolulu indicted a man yesterday for allegedly smuggling illegal aliens from India and other Asian countries posing as his wife into the United States.

Anand Sharma allegedly conspired to smuggle seven women on separate occasions from Dec. 29, 1999 to July 15, 2002 into New York, Seattle and Honolulu.

Sharma would accompany the women on commercial flights, providing them with his wife's passport, whose photograph had been altered, to enter the United States, according to the indictment.

The women allegedly paid Sharma through an agent from $20,000 to $25,000 after successfully smuggling them in.

The indictment said Sharma allegedly conspired with others to bring in aliens for financial gain.
