Metzger-Wong
sweeps Swiss, takes on
Argentineans today

Punahou products Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger swept Swiss brothers Paul and Martin Laciga 21-14, 21-13 to advance to the quarterfinals at the FIVB Grand Slam in Marseilles, France, yesterday.

They will take on world champions Marioano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina, who they beat last week to snap a five-match drought and take a bronze medal, today in the quarterfinals.

Savo signs with Nuggets

Predrag Savovic officially signed his contract with the Denver Nuggets on Thursday.

Terms of the deal were not released.

The 6-foot-6, 212-pound guard considered offers from Europe before agreeing to a deal with the Nuggets last week.

Savovic was not selected on the June 26 NBA Draft. The former UH standout was an honorable mention All-American last season.

The Nuggets also signed second-round draft pick Vincent Yarbrough and guard Lorinza "Junior" Harrington.

Ta'amu heads to Minnesota

Iolani alumnus Ed Ta'amu signed a three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday.

The Vikings will pay the fourth-round draft pick from Utah around $250,000 per season, Ta'amu said. The guard also receives a signing bonus which he said is more than $100,000.

"I'm not really concerned with the money," Ta'amu said. "I'm just happy to get it out of the way and get ready for camp next week."

Carney completes volleyball camp

Sean Carney of Iolani completed the USA Volleyball Development Camp this week at Long Beach State.

The top 25-33 percent of juniors in the country that attended a tryout for USA volleyball's junior national team and high performance camp but did not earn a spot on the roster were invited to development camp.

Carney's camp team won this year's Camp Championship.
