Kono drops to fourth
at Junior Worlds


Stephanie Kono slipped to fourth at the Callaway Junior World Championships after firing a 1-over-par 63 yesterday in San Diego.

The Honolulu resident's three-day total of 184 trails front-runner Sukintorn Saensradi of Thailand by five shots in the girls 11-12 division. Kono is one of several young local golfers making a name for themselves this week at the national event.

Hilo's Amanda Wilson is tied for sixth in the girls 13-14 division after shooting an even-par 72 yesterday for a three-day total of 218. She trails Ya-Ni Tseng of Taiwan by 10 shots. Pearl City's Mari Chun shot a 1-over 73 for a three-day total of 221 and is currently in eighth place.

Kimberly Kim of Pahoa finished third in the girls 9-10 division. She shot a 1-under 57 yesterday to finish eight shots behind winner Tanya Wadhwa of India. Kim's total was 170. In the girls 8 division, Cyd Okino of Honolulu placed seventh at 190, 15 strokes behind winner Dottie Ardina of the Philippines.

Wie improves: Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a second-round 74 to move up to 16th in the Westfield Junior PGA Championship at Westfield Center, Ohio, yesterday.

She is at 150 after two rounds, 18 shots behind leader Sung Ea Lee of Tacoma, Wash.

Kristen Higa of Hilo is in 21st at 153 after shooting a 74.

Koa Furtado of Kailua and Shaun Felechner of Lahaina are tied for 46th in the boys' event.
