Roy in line to become
UH water polo coach


Michel Roy will be the new Hawaii water polo coach, pending approval by UH President Evan Dobelle and the Board of Regents.

Roy, who replaces Shari Smart, was approved by the athletics department this week, according to a source close to the hiring process.

Roy is highly regarded in the water polo community and has coached with several Canadian national teams. He is coach of the successful Pacific Storm club team.

His salary is expected to be between $45-60,000.

Wie, Higa trail Lee at Junior PGA event

WESTFIELDCENTER, Ohio>> Twelve-year old Michelle Wie shot a 5-over-par 76 yesterday, well off the pace at the WestfieldJunior PGAChampionship.

The Punahou seventh grader opened with a 37 and faltered on the back nine with a 39. Wie is tied for 16th place.

SungEaLee of Tacoma, Wash., fired a course-record round of 65 for the lead. Lee tied a Junior PGA Championship first-round record with her round, which included seven birdies and one bogey.

Hilo's Kristen Higa shot an 80 and is tied with seven other golfers for 33rd place.

In the boys division, Lahaina's Shaun Felcchner is 10 shots behind the leader after a round of 77.

Tyler Aldridge of Nampa, Idaho, tied the Junior PGA Championship mark for lowest first-round score.

Kailua's Koa Furtado shot an 8-over 79.

The tournament runs through Saturday.

Yachts close in on finish line

Zephyrus and Mari Cha continued to lead Pegasus 77 yesterday in the West Marine Pacific Cup yacht race from San Francisco to Kaneohe.

The boats are in the home stretch of the race, with the first finisher expected just before 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Two Guys On The Edge, a Waikiki Yacht Club entry, remained in second place in the doublehanded division.

Maui's Naughty Hotty still leads Division C and Pegasus 77, another Waikiki Yacht Club boat, is still in the running for first-to-arrive honors.

Depontes goes out in tennis tournament

ROCKVILLE, Md. >> Kailua-Kona's Nainoa Depontes lost to Stephen Shao of Greeneville, Tenn., 6-4, 6-3 in Consolation Round 3 (boys 16) yesterday at the USTASuperNational Clay Court tournament.

AndyNarido of Keaau lost to Ben Zink of Elizabethtown, Pa., 6-2, 6-2 in the Consolation Round 2.

Aiea's Dennis Lajola fell to Michael Sroczynski of Chatham, N.J., 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 in boys 14 round of 16 play.
