Konishiki’s appearance
all for the kids

FORMER SUMOTORI Salevaa Atisanoe, also known as Konishiki, rolled up deep when he visited the Hard Rock Cafe Tuesday. The big man brought 35 children from his Konishiki's Kids Foundation to participate in a dedication ceremony for a sumo pin set being added to the restaurant's popular retail pin collection. Konishiki's been keeping a busy schedule lately as he promotes his latest album, "Simply Sale." ...

GET UP EARLY tomorrow and head downtown for a fund-raiser breakfast as the aloha-shirt army arrives for work. Finance Factors hosts the benefit, now in its seventh year, from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. in front of the Finance Factors Center at 1164 Bishop St.

A donation of $5 gets you a heaping plate of Kukui Brand Portuguese sausage, scrambled eggs and rice. Catch of the Day Sushi's Troy "Shaka" Teruya will be there to serve up special VIP breakfasts for four that will also be available. All proceeds from the morning grinds will go to the Aloha United Way. ...

THINGS ARE GOING to get spicy at Banditos Cantina in Aiea. Star 101.9 morning jock Hudson Hott (how appropriate) hosts a chili pepper eating contest there from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Going along with the chili pepper theme, the contest's winner will receive a pair of tickets to the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert scheduled for July 31 at the Blaisdell. I can only wonder how the others who enter that contest will feel after they've eaten all those peppers, only to watch someone else go home with the tickets. ...

ALSO ON SATURDAY, Jaron's in Kailua plays host to the CD release party for the new Marty Dread release "On the Beach." Local island musicians O-Shen, the Chief Ragga and Milo Shade's Tiki will also be on hand to celebrate. Island Rhythm 98.5's Bruddah Jake will emcee. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. to this 21-and-over Windward party, and $5 gets you through the door. Call 261-4600 for more info. ...

FINALLY, I need to correct something that appeared Tuesday in this space -- although talented in his own right, the Nocturnal Sound Krew's DJ Compose didn't win the DMC American Battleground Hawaii regional on Saturday. Rather, it was fellow NSK member DJ Solution who won the title for the second year in a row. My apologies. ...
