Asashoryu, Chiyotaikai
hold lead

NAGOYA, Japan (AP) - Mongolian wrestler Asashoryu extended his unbeaten run to nine and edged to within one win of promotion to sumo's second-highest rank by overpowering Miyabiyama on Monday in the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai, who also improved to 9-0, shared the lead with Asashoryu, and Hawaiian-born yokozuna Musashimaru trailed them with just one loss.

At the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, sekiwake Asashoryu initially went on the defensive, parrying komusubi Miyabiyama's flurry of jabs. But with a quick sidestep and a deft shove, Asashoryu mounted a counterattack, grasping the lower-ranked wrestler's belt and hoisting him out of the ring.

Asashoryu, whose real name is Dolgorsvren Dagvadjr, needs at least 10 victories this tournament to have a chance at reaching the ozeki rank.

Chiyotaikai lowered his head and easily drove out No. 7 maegashira Takanonami. Takanonami slipped to 7-2.

In the day's final match, Musashimaru, whose real name is Fiamalu Penitani, brushed off Toki's slaps and charged ahead. Pushed onto his heels, Toki stumbled backward and into the crowd.

In other bouts, hometown favorite No. 14 maegashira Buyuzan picked up his second loss to No. 3 maegashira Kyokutenho, who went to 6-3. Mongolian Kyokutenho, whose real name is Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, used his longer reach to shove the smaller Buyuzan toward the ring's edge before lifting him out by the belt.

No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, was beaten by No. 4 maegashira Kaiho to pick up his eighth loss. Kaiho was 4-5.

In the 26-member juryo division, South Korean Kasugao, whose real name is Kim Son-tek, tossed Mongolian Asasekiryu to the dirt. Kasugao was 4-5, while Asasekiryu, whose real name is Badaarch Dashunyam, dropped to 3-6.
