Asashoryu, Takanonami and
Chiyotaikai share lead

NAGOYA, Japan (AP) - Mongolian wrestler Asashoryu took a step toward promotion to sumo's second highest rank Saturday, twisting down Kotomitsuki to stay unbeaten at 7-0 in the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai and No. 7 maegashira Takanonami also won to share the lead with the Mongolian sekiwake, whose real name is Dolgorsvren Dagvadjr. Asashoryu needs 10 victories this tournament to ensure promotion to ozeki.

One step behind at 6-1 were Hawaiian-born yokozuna Musashimaru and No. 14 maegashira Buyuzan.

Asashoryu clashed fiercely with Kotomitsuki at the face-off, grabbed his opponent's belt and threw him down.

Chiotaikai pushed out Aminishiki, who dropped to 2-5.

Takanonami and Takanowaka had to fight each other twice Saturday after judges ruled they hit the ground at the same time in their first bout. There was no question about who the winner was in the rematch, with Takanonami toppling his opponent with a clean leg throw.

Musashimaru, whose real name is Fiamalu Penitani, wasted little time bulldozing out Kaiho (3-4).

In other bouts, No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, lost to Hokutoriki (3-4) to pick up his sixth loss against one win.

Mongolian Kyokutenho, whose real name is Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, beat Akinoshima (3-4) to improve to 5-2.

In the 26-member juryo division, Asasekiryu, or Mongolian Badaarch Dashunyam, lost to Wakakosho and fell to 2-5.

South Korean Kasugaoh, who real name is Kim Son-tek, beat Daishodai for his second win against five defeats.
