Powers sends Hobgood
home at Mr. Price Pro

Kauai's Roy Powers won his heat and eliminated world champion CJ Hobgood in the process at the Mr. Price Pro surfing event at Durban, South Africa, yesterday.

Powers advanced to the round of 24 along with fellow Hawaii surfer Ross Williams, who finished second behind Che Stang in his heat.

Andy Irons was seeded but did not surf in the competition.

Megan Abubo and Keala Kennelly shared the same heat but were both eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Skipper and crew rescued at Pacific Cup

The skipper and three-person crew of a disabled yacht in the West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe were rescued yesterday by a cargo vessel.

The Mimos was left drifting toward the California coast, some 300 miles away, race officials said.

The 41-foot sloop lost its rudder, and skipper Nicolas Winssinger was unable to count on reliable steering from an auxiliary rudder, they said.

The Coast Guard was contacted, and the cargo vessel Rickmers Hamburg, which was headed to Long Beach, Calif., was diverted to make the rescue.

Meanwhile, Wildfire continued to lead the fleet while the staggered start concluded with the biggest and fastest yachts leaving San Francisco.
